GOVERNOR CUOMO SIGNS ASM. FAHY’S ‘VAMPIRE APPLIANCES’ ENERGY EFFICIENCY BILL

ALBANY, N.Y.— Assemblymember Patricia Fahy (D — Albany) today announced the Governor has signed two pieces of legislation she sponsored aimed at making New York State’s energy portfolio more energy efficient.
Newly signed bill, A.7779 Fahy/S.5866 Jackson, requires the Department of State to adopt energy efficient performance standards for certain common household appliances. Americans spend an estimated $19 billion a year — or an average of $165 to $440 per household — in electricity and energy costs from ‘vampire appliances’, or appliances that are always-on even when not being used. Provisions of A.7779 include required reporting to ensure these missing standards and regulations are implemented so that New Yorkers may enjoy utility bill reductions from improved efficiency and monitor effectiveness of these standards in relation to ‘vampire energy’ output.
“Vampire appliances are costing New York households and families up to over $400 a year — due to missing energy efficiency standards New York has failed to adopt,” said Assemblymember Patricia Fahy. “I thank the Governor for signing legislation to require NYSERDA implement these standards so that New Yorkers can reduce their energy usage and carbon footprint whilst enjoying reductions in annual electricity costs.”
